In 1994, the small African nation of Rwanda experienced one of the darkest chapters in its history - the medical tragedy of the Rwandan Genocide. The genocide, which lasted for approximately 100 days, saw the systematic extermination of an estimated 800,000 people, mostly belonging to the Tutsi ethnic group.

During this tragic period, the already fragile healthcare system in Rwanda was completely overwhelmed. Hospitals and clinics were targeted and destroyed, medical personnel were killed, and many health facilities were forced to close their doors. As a result, access to essential medical care became virtually non-existent for the Rwandan population. The breakdown of the healthcare system had devastating consequences. Many people were injured during the violence and had no access to medical treatment, leading to countless preventable deaths. Diseases such as malaria, cholera, and dysentery spread rapidly due to the lack of sanitation and healthcare services. The psychological impact of the genocide also took a heavy toll on the mental health of survivors, with many experiencing severe trauma and PTSD. Unfortunately, mental health services were almost non-existent at the time, leaving survivors to cope with their emotional scars on their own. Since the end of the genocide, Rwanda has made significant strides in rebuilding its healthcare system. The government has invested in improving infrastructure, training healthcare workers, and expanding access to medical services for all citizens. Today, Rwanda is considered a success story in healthcare reform, with impressive gains in healthcare outcomes and coverage. However, the wounds of the medical tragedy of the Rwandan Genocide still run deep for many survivors. The memory of the devastating loss of life and the breakdown of the healthcare system serves as a painful reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting access to medical care in times of crisis.
