The history of Burma, now officially known as Myanmar, has been marred by political turmoil and tragedy, particularly in relation to its elections and governance. Let's take a look at a timeline of election-related events in Myanmar:

1. 1948: Myanmar Gains Independence Myanmar gained independence from British colonial rule in 1948. The country's first general election was held in 1952, establishing a democratic government in the nation. 2. 1962: Military Takes Control In 1962, a military coup led by General Ne Win overthrew the democratic government, establishing a military dictatorship in Myanmar. The military junta remained in power for over five decades, suppressing political opposition and dissent. 3. 1988: Pro-Democracy Protests In 1988, pro-democracy protests broke out across Myanmar, calling for an end to military rule. The military responded with a brutal crackdown, resulting in the deaths of thousands of protesters. The military junta ultimately agreed to hold multiparty elections in 1990. 4. 1990: National League for Democracy (NLD) Wins In the 1990 elections, the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi won a landslide victory, securing more than 80% of the parliamentary seats. However, the military refused to hand over power and continued to rule the country. 5. 2010: Flawed Elections In 2010, Myanmar held its first general elections in 20 years, which were widely criticized for being flawed and undemocratic. The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won a majority of the seats in the parliament. 6. 2015: Aung San Suu Kyi's Victory In the 2015 elections, the NLD, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won a landslide victory, securing a majority in both houses of the parliament. Aung San Suu Kyi became the de facto leader of Myanmar, although the military still held significant power in the government. 7. 2021: Military Coup In February 2021, the military staged a coup, alleging widespread voter fraud in the 2020 general elections, which saw a landslide victory for the NLD. The military detained Aung San Suu Kyi and other government officials, declaring a state of emergency and taking control of the country. The timeline of elections in Myanmar reflects a complex and tumultuous political history marked by periods of democratic progress and setbacks due to military intervention. The recent military coup has once again plunged Myanmar into uncertainty and turmoil, raising concerns about the future of democracy and human rights in the country.
